OSUN JUSUN SUSPENDS STRIKE, DIRECT MEMBERS TO RESUME MARCH 11

The Osun state chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has suspended its ongoing strike action, directing members of the union to resume duty on Monday March 11, 2024. This was contained in a statement issued by union’s Chairman, Comrade Oluwagbemiga Eludire. He noted that the decision is pursuant to the tripartite memorandum agreement signed between the Osun State Government, management of Osun State Judiciary and JUSUN leadership. Judicial workers in Ogun have shut down courts in the state following the commencement of a five-day warning strike over non-payment of the 40 percent peculiar allowance. The workers, under the aegis of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, Ogun State chapter, were stationed before the state high court and magistrate court in Isabo, Abeokuta, ensuring that the gates remained locked. Litigants and lawyers were seen loitering around as judges were also prevented from accessing the premises and performing their duties. Chairman of JUSUN in Ogun state, Olarenwaju Ajiboye noted that the workers were forced to embark on the strike following the refusal of the state government to accede to their demands following the expiration of the 21 day ultimatum issued to the state government. JUDICIARY STRIKE: END IN SIGHT AS OSUN STATE GOVERNOR MEETS WITH JUSUN NATIONAL EXECUTIVES

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has again appealed for amicable resolution of the ongoing strike by the state chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN). He hosted a delegation of JUSUN national executives led by the President, Comrade Marwan Adamu, seeking their intervention to end the dispute. Expressing concerns over the disruption of justice administration, Governor Adeleke recounted his previous efforts including paying withheld salaries of some judicial staff and negotiations on wardrobe allowances.  However, he noted that the issues are beyond the executive arm as it is a judicial matter. While assuring his full support, the Governor urged the national leadership of JUSUN to interface with all parties involved to find lasting solutions and restore industrial harmony in the state judiciary. WHO WILL SAVE OSUN STATE JUDICARY

By: Ebun Olu-Adegboruwa, SAN                          The Judiciary in Osun state is in some quandary at the moment, nearing a total paralysis of governance, if the anomaly is not arrested urgently.  In law, there are three levels of governance in every State in Nigeria, the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary.  All the three arms must work together.  The legislature enacted the law that created the offices of the three arms, specifying their respective duties and obligations.  The executive formulates policies and programmes for the government and the people while the judiciary acts as a check upon the exercise of the powers of state.  Upon his election, the President is sworn in by the Chief Justice of Nigeria and upon his assumption of office, the President in turn proclaims the legislature.  The President appoints the Chief Justice and for the latter to properly assume office, his appointment has to be confirmed by the Senate and thereafter he has to be sworn in by the Pre
