NIGERIAN BAR ASSOCIATION SETS UP ANNUAL GENERAL CONFERENCE PLANNING COMMITTEE


The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau SAN, has set up two key committees to organize the Annual General Conference (AGC) 2024 and review lawyers’ fees.

This year’s NBA Conference is scheduled to hold in Lagos as the new 17-member planning team begins preparations to build on the success recorded at the 2023 edition.

Both appointments by newly elected NBA President Yakubu Maikyau is aimed at setting the stage for transformational outcomes in the association.

NOTICE OF CONSTITUTION OF ANNUAL GENERAL CONFERENCE PLANNING COMMITTEE AND NATIONAL REMUNERATION COMMITTEE

Distinguished Colleagues,

I had earlier had the privilege to communicate the decision of the National Executive Committee that the NBA Annual General Conference (AGC) 2024 will be held in Lagos State.

In a bid to have another epoch making AGC, building on the immense success of the AGC2023, the President of the NBA, Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau,OON, SAN has appointed Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya as the Chairperson of the Annual General Conference Planning Committee 2024(AGCPC). 

She was the alternate chairman for the AGCPC2023.

Other members are:
Amina Sulieman Kaoje – Alternate Chairperson

Laura Alakija – Secretary

Chika Eucharia Okorie – Assistant Secretary

Other members will be announced later whilst the committee reserves the power to co-opt members as they deem necessary.

In the same vein, the President has also constituted the NBA NATIONAL REMUNERATION COMMITTEE as follows:

1. Mazi Afam Osigwe SAN – Chairman

2. Aminu Sani Gadanya, mni – Alternate Chairman

3. Foluke Akinmoladun – Secretary

4. Florence Marcus – Assistant Secretary

5. Professor Agbo Johnson Madaki – Member

6. Adama Mohammed – Member

7. Cordelia Uwuma Eke – Member

8. Damian Nosike – Member

9. Abdulwasiu Alfa – Member

10. Barbara Omosun – Member

11. Augustine Nwabueze Eseagwu – Member

It will be recalled that at the National Executive Council Meeting of the NBA held on 7 December 2023, the NBA Renumeration Implementation Committee made recommendations inter-alia, for the establishment of the NBA Renumeration Committee referred to in paragraphs 10, 11 and 12 of the Legal Practitioners Renumeration (for Business, Legal Service and Representation) Order, 2023.

BETTA EDU: EFCC RECOVERS 30 BILLION NAIRA

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has so far recovered 30 Billion naira for the Federal Government while it has also placed 50 bank accounts under investigation in the ongoing probe of the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, including the erstwhile chief executive officer of the now suspended National Social Investment Programme Authority (NSIPA), Halima Shehu. Both Edu and Shehu were suspended about three months ago by President Bola Tinubu over alleged financial malfeasance.  The President also suspended Social Investment Programme and, thereafter, asked the EFCC to take over the case and probe both embattled officials including anyone involved. NIGERIAN LAW SCHOOL TO CLEAR BACKLOG OF ADMISSION

  The management of Nigerian Law school has been given the go-ahead to clear the back log of admission for qualified law graduates who are yet to be admitted for the mandatory one year training Programme for legal practitioners in Nigeria. This decisions formed part of the resolution of the Council for Legal Education at it's just concluded council meeting. The council announced the commencement of a Mid-Year Academic Session for the 2024/2025 academic calendar by May to address the backlog of law graduates resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and the Industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).  According to the council, this session is however not open to universities that exceeded their approved admission quotas.
