ABUJA: INTERNATIONAL LAW ASSOCIATION (NIGERIA) ANNUAL CONFERENCE HOLDS TODAY

The Nigerian branch of the International Law Association (ILA-NG) will today hold its annual conference in Abuja the nation's capital.

The conference, scheduled to hold at Abuja Continental Hotel, will examine the role of international law in advancing public-private partnerships (PPP) as a tool for promoting sustainable investment in public infrastructure and development projects.

It will provide a platform for international lawyers to discuss the design, financing and implementation of PPP's at national, regional, and global levels, in a manner that does not negatively impact international human rights and sustainable development. 

Lawyers, non-lawyers in business and financial spheres, academics, advocates, practitioners and students interested in international law, will be attend the conference.

Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Special Adviser on Ease of Doing Business and Investment ((PEBEC) to the President of Nigeria, will a keynote lecture and a keynote gala conversation with former executive Governor of Ekiti state, Dr. John Kayode Fayemi will also take place alongside panel discussions by leading practitioners on how PPP can be effectively regulated in Nigeria.

Chairperson of the conference organising committee, Oludayo Olorunfemi, said, “This year’s conference provides a timely opportunity for stakeholders to examine the intricate relationship between international law and the financing of infrastructure using a public-private partnership model. 

With the growing recognition of the need to urgently mobilize financing to address infrastructure deficits in key economic sectors, such as power, public health, food security and education amongst others, PPPs have become highly important if well structured. 

This conference provides a high-profile platform to examine how law can better respond to the opportunities and commercial risks in structuring PPPs. 

This conference will aim to deliver latest knowledge and networking opportunities for practitioners and researchers in this important area.” she concluded.

The ILA, founded in Brussels in 1873, now has over, 4,500 members in 45 national and regional branches around the world, is headquartered in London under the leadership of the global chair, Professor Christine Chinkin.
