PLWD DAY: NATIONAL ASSEMBLY MUST AMEND THE ELECTORAL ACT TO ACCOMODATE PEOPLE LIVING WITH DISABILITY... SEGUN OYEDEJI
The National assembly has been urged to further amend the electoral act towards making provisions for People Living with Disability in Nigeria having representation at all levels of the legislative arm of government right from the local government up to the Senate.
This form the crux of discussion at this year's International Day for People with disability, an annual event set aside by the United Nations towards celebrating the meaningful existence people with one form of disability or the other.
In a well attended program for people living with disability, organised by the supervisory councillor for PLWD in Ibadan South-West local government, Hon. Olusegun Abayomi Oyedeji, within the council premises, member of the PLWD community converged to celebrate their triumph against discrimination and segregation in the society and to also fashion out ways to further enhance their chances in their day today living.
Hon. Segun Oyedeji said the next target of the leadership of the PLWD in the country, is to ensure that at least one seat is set aside at the National, state houses of assembly and local government legislative chambers across the country for only people with disability to put themselves out there for election and be voted for.
This he said will ensure adequate representation for people in this category.
According to him, women have been carried along with the 35 percent affirmation for women inclusion in politics, same thing as youth who how been included as youth leaders.
Much as we are grateful for the inclusion in the 33 local government areas of Oyo state as supervisory councillors, the national clamour now is that we want to be involved in the legislative business of this country.
We want to take our destiny in our own hands.
Laws for the welfare and well-being of people living with disability this country is being formulated behind us with us been fully involved which should not be so.
Each state should have one senator from the physically challenged community, at least a federal representative from each state and at least from for each state House of assembly.
This will engender fair balance and inclusion and enable us monitor how legislations and bills tailored towards our welfare is being enacted.
